feature film - 2017
In Iceland, just like in Estonia, everyone has spent at least one summer in the countryside, visiting relatives. The summer that 9-year-old Sól spends in the countryside changes her forever.
On top of a mountain in Iceland lives a monster that appears to humans in the form of a swan. When it looks into a person’s eyes, it sees right through them and tells them who they truly are and what their life will become. Encountering the swan is an introspective experience, comparable to facing Icelandic nature itself—with its powerful mountains, watery grasslands, and strong winds. That’s often why many people are drawn to travel to Iceland, even if it means wandering through the harsh weather in a camper van.
For 9-year-old Sól, however, this isn’t a free choice—her family banishes her to the wild and lonely landscape as punishment for a theft. At first, the imaginative girl longs deeply to return home. But gradually, she learns to love the strong winds, swaying grasses, sodden moss, somewhat wild horses, and a small calf whose birth and death she witnesses. The film mirrors this transformation: it is slow and beautifully composed, inviting the viewer to look inward, to reflect, and to grow alongside the protagonist.
“The Swan” is based on the short story of the same name by acclaimed Icelandic author Guðbergur Bergsson.
